Honoring a Life. Standing with a Family. Showing Up Together.

So far this year, the South Carolina Responder Support Initiative has had the privilege of supporting three funerals within the EMS community.

None of these were line-of-duty deaths.
But each one represented a life of service, a legacy of impact, and a family—and profession—feeling the weight of loss.

And in each case, we were reminded of something we believe deeply:

You don’t have to die in the line of duty to deserve to be honored like you served.

How We Showed Up

For all three services, RSI was honored to stand alongside families, agencies, and fellow responders in meaningful, tangible ways:

🇺🇸 Presentation of a Service Flag
Each family received a service-related flag—a lasting symbol of honor, sacrifice, and commitment. Something to carry forward long after the service ends.

🐾 Therapy K9 Support
At two of the services, our therapy K9 teams were present—offering quiet, grounding comfort in moments where words often fall short.

🎶 Bagpipe Coordination
For the first time, we helped connect a family with a bagpiper for the service—adding a powerful and traditional tribute that resonated deeply with those in attendance. This has now grown into a network of available pipers we can call upon in the future.

🤝 Presence Over Performance
Above all, we simply showed up—standing with crews, sitting with families, and being present in the moments that matter most.

Why This Matters

In the responder world, grief doesn’t always come with headlines.
But it still comes.

It comes after long careers.
After quiet struggles.
After years of showing up for others.

And when it does, our community deserves support that understands the weight of that service—not just clinically, but culturally.

That’s what RSI is here to do.

Moving Forward

These three services have already surpassed the number of funerals we supported last year. While that’s not a statistic we celebrate, it is a reminder:

The need is real. And the mission matters.

We remain committed to:

  • Honoring every responder’s legacy
  • Supporting families with dignity and care
  • Standing alongside agencies in their hardest moments

Because this work doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.
And neither does our support.

If your agency or family ever needs support—whether before, during, or after a loss—RSI is here.

Celebrating Our Inaugural Introduction to Peer Support Class!

This past March we had the privilege of graduating 28 participants from the first-ever Introduction to Peer Support course hosted by the South Carolina Responder Support Initiative (SC-RSI). This class brought together responders from EMS, fire service, law enforcement, and members of our SC-RSI Therapy K9 teams—all united by a shared commitment to taking care of the people who take care of others.

Over the course of the training, participants explored the foundations of peer support, including the role and ethics of a peer supporter, active listening and trauma-informed communication, emotional regulation and micro-regulation techniques, recognizing stress and trauma reactions in responders, maintaining healthy boundaries, and understanding when and how to connect someone with additional resources. The course also introduced the Peer Support Compass framework, practical tools for supporting fellow responders during difficult moments, and the importance of building strong, trust-based relationships within the responder community.

More than the knowledge gained, what stood out most was the spirit of partnership and brotherhood/sisterhood that developed in the room. We are incredibly proud of these 28 graduates and grateful for their willingness to step forward and serve their peers.

This class may have been the first, but it is only the beginning.

A Sacred Trust: Honoring Assistant Chief Don Wilkins

On July 12th, 2025, SC-RSI had the quiet honor of fulfilling two of the specific missions named in our bylaws: providing chaplain support and assisting with funeral services when needed.

We were privileged to walk alongside those honoring Assistant Chief Don Wilkins—offering presence, prayer, and ceremony.

SC-RSI exists for moments like this. Our team includes culturally competent, trauma-informed chaplains and individuals trained in ceremonial and memorial support. We count it a sacred trust to serve those who serve.

We enjoyed being able to connect with so many responders and supporters at the 2025 Emergency Services Behavioral Health Summit on July 10th, 2025.

Standing in Remembrance: 2025 EMS Memorial Service

It was our honor to have been part of the 2025 EMS Memorial Service on May 18th, 2025.
